      I would think that the division of labour. When we figured out that we were more efficient specialising in a task and master it, the overall production of the society improves. But for that we had to evolve complex communication and the use of tools. I see it as a growing snowball, each generation has available the knowledge of the previous one, so as a species, we can store knowledge and use it.
