Yes, and in some limited cases this is already possible. In glass houses there are robots that automatically pick strawberries and cucumbers. In field crops, a lot of work is being done on small robots that can automatically detect and kill weeds.
Tractors nowadays can steer themselves and adjust the fertiliser rates as they drive along – BUT you still need someone in the tractor cabin (even if they are doing nothing) for safety reasons. I is a bad look if a tractor goes haywire and starts driving randomly across and through fields (highly unlikely as they all have safeguards built in).
Even though we have more and more people on the planet, most of them are living or moving to cities. It is very hard to find labour for many agricultural regions. A lot of agricultural work is manual and hard (and not well paid). Robots will help us to solve this.

One day, as James said, we have most of the technology. Sadly, it is more likely to happen in the developed world than in the developing countries, which will increase the breach between poor and rich.

      Hi jrwyatt

Yes, farm work can be very hard so I think getting robots to do the toughest tasks is a good idea. I’m not sure whether I like the idea of lots of drones flying around all over the place, think that might be a bit scary.
