      Hi jackthedragonrider
If you visit a diamond mine you can sometimes find them on the surface after heavy rain. The rain washes the soil away and exposes them. Otherwise you don’t have to dig very deep, maybe 6 inches or so.

Diamonds are formed deep in the earths crust, because they need huge pressure (force) to be created. Bu once they are created they are very stable. There are many geological processes (earthquakes, upheavals, erosion etc) that could bring them up to the surface (very quickly or over thousands/millions of years) where they are easy to find. Or many of them could still be buried kilometres below the surface.
